ACID REFLUX & HEARTBURN – HOW DIET CAN HELP YOUR SYMPTOMS

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is a common condition affecting at least one in 10 of the population on a weekly basis. GORD is a term used to describe a range of symptoms acid reflux, heartburn, and oesophagitis.

Acid reflux or heartburn affects different people for various reasons. Some issues may be medical related and others may be caused by diet.

Most symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn can, however, can be reduced or resolved through a suitable diet.

Common causes of acid reflux

  • Being overweight
  • Pregnancy
  • Hiatus hernia
  • Helicobacter pylori infection

Medications that either neutralise the gastric acid or suppress acid secretion can be effective. It is important to discuss your symptoms with your GP.

Dietary advice to manage acid reflux

  • Small frequent meals and snacks are likely to be tolerated better so avoid large portions and missing meals.
  • Avoid alcohol.
  • Avoid strong tea and coffee.
  • Avoid very spicy foods.
  • ‘Acidic’ foods such as citrus fruits (oranges, lemon) or tomatoes can make symptoms worse.
  • Avoid fried or very fatty foods such as takeaways, fried sausages and chips (use oven baked foods instead).
  • Aim for a healthy weight as being overweight can make symptoms of acid reflux worse
  • Avoid eating late at night
  • Avoid bending, lifting or lying down after meals.

Other advice

  • Smoking cessation can help reduce reflux
  • Avoid aspirin, use Paracetamol for pain control instead
