To date, the largest part of my dietetic experience has been in Paediatrics where I have been involved in the provision of a specialist service to children referred for dietetic management by GP’s, consultants and other healthcare professionals. I have been advising on infant feeding, weaning, fussy eating, faltering growth, obesity, bowel disorders, anaemia (and other nutrient deficiencies), Coeliac disease, Autism, and more. I have worked closely with young adults having anxiety linked eating problems resulting in either anorexic or obesity status as well as educating and supporting children and young adults with Type 1 Diabetes.
An opportunity to work at Britain’s most prestigious children’s hospital; Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, allowed me to further develop my skills providing oral and enteral nutrition support in the dietetic management of challenging and rare clinical conditions. Paediatric patients admitted to the following specialised wards fell under my caseload; Immunology, Infectious disease, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Craniofacial in addition to weekly dietetic support in a Consultant led outpatient clinic for children living with HIV.
After graduating in 1997 with a BSc in European Food Studies I spent 10 years in the food industry working in research; product development and technical sales. In my mid thirties I re-evaluated my ambitions and embarked on another degree; BSc Nutrition and Dietetics, with the aim to combine my knowledge and experience gained in the food industry with my lifelong desire to work in health care.
After graduating as a Registered Dietitian, I started my first of several roles with East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, providing general dietetic support to outpatients living with lifelong and chronic conditions such as obesity; diabetes; cardiovascular disease; coeliac disease; IBS; IBD; food hypersensitivity; PCOS and pregnancy, as well as more acute, nutritional support in the areas of Cancer, Stroke and Dementia.
Parallel to this I spent time with Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (a mental health trust), where I was employed to scope, identify and provide appropriate dietetic recommendations to a Trust without a Nutrition and Dietetics department.
With the same Trust I was later a key member of a group therapy team providing treatment for adult patients with mild to moderate eating disorders in the Brighton and Hove community. Keyworker and Dietitian alongside a Team Lead, Clinical Psychologist, Assistant Group Therapist and Practitioner I was employed to help patients to better understand their eating disorder and either achieve weight maintenance or weight recovery. I self-devised a 7-session nutrition programme teaching the concept of healthy eating to those with Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa, Binge eating disorder and other (not otherwise specified) eating disorders. It was alongside this part-time role and after where I moved into the Paediatric Specialty.
In all aspects of new and continuing patient assessments and treatment I strive to adopt evidence-based practice. I closely consult other Specialist Health Professionals and appropriate resources in order to provide the best possible patient care and take seriously my responsibility to public health and the reputation of dietetics. It is therefore my responsibility to act in a professional and ethical manner, working in the interest of public safety at all times as laid out by the Code of Professional Conduct. I am registered with the Health Professions Council and a member of the British Dietetic Association and its sub groups; Paediatric Dietitians; Food Allergy and Freelance Dietitians.
Outside of work, I am a wife to a general builder; Jon and a Mum to our 2-year-old daughter; Olivia. I play the piano and sing and have often performed at corporate events and weddings of close friends and family. I am also a keen pool player.
I also work as a professional seamstress making curtains and blinds and soft furnishings, something I have done since my teens to generate income when studying.
I am a dedicated, passionate professional who is highly motivated to provide a seamless service to children and the families with whom I may interact.
